Hosted at the University of Wisconsin, Madison
When
May 24 & 25, 2017
Where
Union South
Madison, Wisconsin
The goal is to foster greater communication and interaction between pancreatic islet cell biology investigators within the Midwest region. The meeting will be composed of both senior and junior investigators, with exclusively students, postdoctoral fellows and newly independent investigators serving as speakers. The exception is the keynote talk established in memory of the late Dr. Paul Lacy, who pioneered pancreatic islet isolation and transplantation in St. Louis.
Registration deadline is April 30, 2017. Please register here for $225. Please note our cancellation policy!
Abstracts are due by March 24, 2017. Click here to submit an abstract (abstract submission guidelines are available).
The conference will be held at Union South on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.
If you are a PI who is interested in hiring or a trainee looking for a position, please plan to attend the recruitment session offered during one of the refreshment breaks on May 25th. Those with positions available should bring printed materials with job description and may send job description in advance to Feyza Engin, who will coordinate this session.
Those looking for positions in the next year should bring paper copies of their CVs to the meeting.
Alan D. Attie, Ph.D.
Jack Gorski Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison
Dr. Attie is the Jack Gorski Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has spent his entire career at the UW. His initial research focus was on lipid and lipoprotein metabolism, including seminal discoveries in the regulation of LDL. Over the past 15 years, his lab has characterized a novel mouse model of type 2 diabetes, the BTBR ob/ob mouse. Using this model, Dr. Attie has used exquisite genetic studies and gene expression screens to identify key regulators of beta-cell mass and beta-cell function. With an unbiased approach to discovering diabetes susceptibility loci, his lab has initiated numerous new pathways of investigation in the beta-cell and launched the careers of several highly productive islet biologists.
Please plan to arrive for boxed lunch on May 24th and beginning of the first oral sessions at 2pm. Please plan return travel home for May 26th.
Presentations selected from submitted abstracts will communicate the latest in cutting-edge pancreatic islet beta-cell research in relevance to both type-1 and -2 diabetes. The hope of the organizing committee is that the participation of the roughly 150 islet investigators will result in greater collaborations among individuals and their supporting groups.
Towards this end, funds have been raised to provide awards for the top three oral and poster presentations given by young investigators, postdoctoral fellows or students.
We would like to thank our local supporters, regional Diabetes Research Centers , as well as industry and foundation supporters:
