The goal is to foster greater communication and interaction between pancreatic islet cell biology investigators within the Midwest region. The meeting will be composed of both senior and junior investigators, with exclusively students, postdoctoral fellows and newly independent investigators serving as speakers. The exception is the keynote talk established in memory of the late Dr. Paul Lacy, who pioneered pancreatic islet isolation and transplantation in St. Louis.
Registration deadline is March 30, 2018. Please register here for $225. Please note our cancellation policy!
Abstracts are due by March 30, 2018. Click here to submit an abstract.
The conference will be held at the Eric P. Newman Education Center, located at 320 S. Euclid Avenue on the Washington University School of Medicine campus. Hotel options are provided below.

Beginning in collaboration with Paul Lacy in the late 1970s, Mike McDaniel, Stan Misler and John Turk drove WU islet research from the 1980s onwards. Ground-breaking work by Mike and John in the 1980s and 90s elucidated the role of phospholipid-derived mediators , interleukins and other cytokines on glucose-induced insulin secretion. At the same time as John was developing sophisticated approaches to measuring cellular metabolites, Stan was carrying out pioneering electrophysiological analysis of beta cells, defining the metabolic dependence of ATP-sensitive potassium channels in a seminal 1986 study with Mike, going on to define links between Ca currents and granule exocytosis using new membrane capacitance and amperometry techniques. Eternally modest, with a quiet focus on uncovering the fundamental biochemical and biophysical processes regulating islet biology, this trio initiated lines of research that are still key to understanding islet function, and launched the careers of numerous luminaries of this field.
The meeting will start with lunch at 12 noon, and the scientific sessions at 2.00 pm on Day 1, and conclude following the banquet dinner on Day 2.
Presentations selected from submitted abstracts will communicate the latest in cutting-edge pancreatic islet beta-cell research in relevance to both type-1 and -2 diabetes. The hope of the organizing committee is that the participation of the roughly 150 islet investigators will result in greater collaborations among individuals and their supporting groups.
Towards this end, funds have been raised to provide awards for the top three oral and poster presentations given by young investigators, postdoctoral fellows or students.
We would like to thank our local supporters, regional Diabetes Research Centers , as well as industry and foundation supporters:
