The goal is to foster greater communication and interaction between pancreatic islet cell biology investigators within the Midwest region. The meeting will be composed of both senior and junior investigators, with exclusively students, postdoctoral fellows and newly independent investigators serving as speakers. The exception is the keynote talk established in memory of the late Dr. Paul Lacy, who pioneered pancreatic islet isolation and transplantation in St. Louis.
Sorry, but registration is closed.
Abstracts are due by April 5, 2019. Click here to submit an abstract.

Domenico Accili, M.D.
Dr. Domenico Accili is the Russell Berrie Foundation Professor of Diabetes, Chief of the Endocrinology Division and Director of the Diabetes Research Center at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Accili is highly regarded for transformative findings that have advanced our understanding of the pathogenesis, or causes and development, of type 2 diabetes. He has received numerous awards, including the American Diabetes Association’s Lilly Award for Outstanding Scientific Achievement in 2003 and the Banting Medal for Scientific Achievement in the 2017. In addition, Dr. Accili is an elected member of the Association of American Physicians and the American Society for Clinical Investigation.
Some of Dr. Accili's most important contributions have been in the area of pancreatic islet β cell biology, specifically in demonstrating that β cell failure, long held to be a consequence of cell death, can result from a dedifferentiation process. Through this process, β cells lose the ability to make insulin, revert to a progenitor stage, and convert to other hormone-producing cells. Dr. Accili is also known for his work to elucidate mechanisms of hepatic glucose production and enteroendocrine cell differentiation.
The meeting will start with lunch and scientific sessions on Day 1 after lunch, and conclude following the banquet dinner and entertainment on Day 2.
The meeting schedule is now available here.
Presentations selected from submitted abstracts will communicate the latest in cutting-edge pancreatic islet beta-cell research in relevance to both type-1 and -2 diabetes. The hope of the organizing committee is that the participation of the roughly 150 islet investigators will result in greater collaborations among individuals and their supporting groups.
Towards this end, funds have been raised to provide awards for the top three oral and poster presentations given by young investigators, postdoctoral fellows or students.
We would like to thank our local supporters, regional Diabetes Research Centers , as well as industry and foundation supporters:
